About Faya Lobi...
A Chinese immigrant's journey to Surinam in 1865 marks the beginning of a chain reaction of adventures that lead to a well-documented story of 200 years of fiery love.
Discover the history of one of CuraƧao's influential planter families as part 2 takes you through 9 generations.
In part 3, Anton candidly shares some intimate details of his almost impossible love in Curacao...
Synopsis
Atsjak (Hong Kong, 1842) leaves for Paramaribo as a contract worker. During the journey, he exchanges his last name with Jong Baw, out of fear of black people. In Surinam, the young Atsjak meets and falls in love with the previously enslaved black Emelia. Despite opposition from his father, their grandson Antonius leaves for CuraƧao where he meets Angela, the love of his life. This love seems almost impossible.
Angela is a descendant of the plantation owner Specht, who started the Koraal Specht plantation in 1660. The story follows several generations of descendants of the Specht family through two centuries and describes how Angela's strict father stands in the way of the love between Angela and Antonius for six years. Even after his consent, the couple still faces a serious ordeal. Decades later, when a school is named after Angela, one of the daughters sets out to discover the origins of both parents and the story behind their ardent love.
This book takes the reader on a dizzying voyage of discovery through a passionate Surinamese-CuraƧao family history.
Meet Ange
Ange Jessurun (CuraƧao, 1954) has been making an active contribution for many years to the formation and development of cultural awareness and (mother tongue) language proficiency, with special attention to youth. These themes are a common thread throughout her life choices and career. She is co-author of the Papiamento-language teaching methods Salto, Mosaiko, and Fiesta di Idioma and the spiritual mother of Arte di Palabra, a successful Papiamento-language literary competition for secondary education. She has published four collections of PĆ²tpurĆ Arte di Palabra in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019.
Since 2009 she has been coordinating the master's programs in teaching Papiamento, English, Spanish, and Dutch in CuraƧao and later also in Aruba, Bonaire, and Sint Maarten at the University of CuraƧao.
Faya Lobi is her first Dutch-language novel and is based on true stories, memories, and historical documents. The story of her Chinese great-grandfather, who traveled from Hong Kong to Paramaribo in 1865 in search of a better life, was the spark that led her to write down the life story of her parents and ancestors.
"It all started with 'tante Willy'..."
"My father's older sister Willy always told us about their Chinese grandfather who traveled from Hong Kong to Surinam and changed his name "out of fear of meeting black people". The fact that he fathered children with a black lady and married her, triggered me to find out more and inspired me to write this story."
